Description
“ | The Varskela is a territorial and hyper-aggressive beast. It uses its large dense icicles protruding from its neck and back as armor, and the icicles on its limbs and tail to cut through its attackers. The Varksela maintains its sub-zero armor by living in glacial caves which drip water onto its coat to then freeze instantly. | „ |
~ In-game Description |
Behavior
- The Varskela likes to find un-opened geodes and will let their children gnaw on it till it cracks and shows the crystals inside (just for fun).
Appearance
The Varskela is a large, six-limbed hexapodal creature. It walks on its thicker forearms, and it has a smaller set of arms situated under the large arm. It has large tusks, two sets of eyes, and round ears. Icy spikes can be found covering many areas of the Varskela's body, including its head, its neck and back, the elbows of its large forearms, and its rump. It has a mid-sized tail with fluff and ice spikes at its tip.
Males
Males have a pair of large, curved horns on their head.
Females
Females have three floating diamond-shaped head pieces.
Abilities
Main Article: Creature Abilities
This section is intended to list and describe the abilities of the Varskela. (editor list)
- Ambush is a recode-only ability, inheritor of the Ambush control in Legacy, and thus shares some similarities to it. Ambush can be toggled by pressing (not holding) the correct active ability key (which may vary between creatures). It will automatically deactivate after a set period of time, after stamina runs out, or after halting movement, whichever happens first. Like legacy ambush, recode Ambush ability allows a temporary speed boost according to an ambush multiplier inherent to the species (e.g. x 1.5 or x 1.25), usually granting a faster Sprint (except when the multiplier is x1.0 or lower). It will not be stopped by entering or leaving water once initiated; but at a higher stamina cost and a possible decrease in turn speed, directly making a creature unable to turn while ambushing. Similar to legacy, a creature can know if ambush is toggled not only from the the evident speed boost while moving, but because when pressing the activation button, the camera FOV zooms out a tiny bit. Ambush can be used while sprinting. However, unlike Legacy ambush, pressing the appropriate key again will not stack max time and stamina consumption, and can be initiated underwater by creatures with the appropriate mobility type (however, it still keeps the Legacy characteristic of keeping creatures not adapted to water from initiating ambush underwater). Additionally, Ambushing disrupts strafing.
- Bleed Attack is a passive ability, where a creature offensively inflicts a specific amount of melee bleed status on a creature with every bite (not with breath/ranged abilities or reflecting abilities). A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
- Bleed Block/Block Bleed is a passive ability that grants the creature resistance to getting bleed status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. Recode's equivalent of bleed defense; it is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 bleed per hit and the receiver has 60% bleed defense, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 bleed.
- If a creature's Block Bleed is 100%, then they are immune to Bleed inflicted by melee direct attacks once fully grown. This ability is gained gradually as the creature ages, that is, a creature with 100% Block Bleed will have some fraction of bleed defense while growing, being such fraction bigger as it grows.
- A negative value in-game may indicate an extra vulnerability to the status effect this ability is supposed to protect from.
- Frostbite Block/Block Frostbite is a passive ability that grants the creature resistance to getting frostbite status from melee attacks at the very least, and every other source at most. It is percentage based, e.g. if an attacker deals 5 frostbite per hit and the receiver has 60% block frostbite, then the receiver gets only 2 of that 5 frostbite.
- Charge (Gore) or Gore Charge is an specific type of Charge that inflicts Bleed Status and Deep Wounds on the victim.
- Climber is a passive ability that allows a creature to walk on walls along with ceilings and some uncollidable terrain if climbing on the right angle. To detach from a wall or ceiling, press Space on PC. On Mobile, press the dedicated Detach button, or, if the creature has Jump, press the jump button.
- Defensive Bleed is a passive ability, where a creature defensively inflicts a specific amount of melee bleed status on an attacker upon getting bitten.
- Frostbite touch/Defensive Frostbite is an ability that defensively deals frostbite when bitten.
- Frostbite Attack is an ability that offensively deals frostbite when biting. A negative value means that it heals an amount of such status upon biting.
- Frosty is a passive ability, equivalent to Legacy's Winter Tag, and causes the creature with the tag to receive an +25% stamina regeneration, +25% health regeneration, -25% thirst depletion, and -25% hunger depletion during Winter and Famine seasons.
- Glacier Breath is an active ability using the breath control (C on PC or on Mobile) that is a type of Elemental Breath that inflicts 2 DPS (1% PER HIT). It has a Capacity of 10 seconds of firetime before recoil damage, a Regen Rate of 2, a Range of 150 studs, a Critical chance of 35%, a Chain value of 10, and a ChainMaxStacks of 10. It has a maximum chain damage of +1,000%. It can also inflict the following ailments: SLOWED (Probability = 30%, no stacking), and Injury (Probability = 30%, STACKS set to 1).
Carry-able Creatures
The Can-Carry lists features lists of creatures that Varskela is carried by, can carry (grab), can latch, and can be latched by in RECODE. To see the lists and their toggles to view each, click on the collapsible text to the right of the table below, to Expand or Collapse the list.

Latched-By ListThis section is intended to list the non-elder fully-grown adult creatures that can grab but not carry (latch onto) the non-elder fully-grown Varskela discounting special abilities. The Varskela (a(n) carnivore) has 3400 weight and can be grabbed by any creature with sufficiently lower weight. However, carnivores and photocarnivores cannot be grabbed by herbivores and photovores, as follows:[Expand] Grab-able by:

Trivia
- Concept by icecreamNavocado.
- The Varskela was inspired by "Naut's prompt for a winter creature with back arms and a purple, blue quartz crystal." (Quoted by concept creator)
- The crystal in question appears to be an unwatermarked version of a photograph by the photographer Geoff Tompkinson.
- The Varskela was originally named "Crinstaly", but this was changed.
- The Varskela was inspired by "Naut's prompt for a winter creature with back arms and a purple, blue quartz crystal." (Quoted by concept creator)
- Modeled by JaxonBirb.
- Varskela's price was accidentally set to 7,000 bells and later set to 5,000 bells within slightly less than an hour of the release of Part 2 of the Winter Event of 2021-2022. The change was released in a soft patch, meaning it would only appear in newly-populated servers post-patch at the time and not in older servers.
- On the day of Varskela's release, it had a skin coloring bug which caused the player to spawn in-game with most of the customized skin reverting back to the default color version. This bug was fixed in a soft patch on the same day.
- Varskela's primary palette is quite similar to Jotunhel's second color palette, albeit the hex codes are not identical and don't follow the same order.
- The creature used to lack the Winter Tag on Legacy, a feature most winter-inspired creatures had that granted them immunity to the Winter and Famine's icy winds. The developers confirmed this was intentional. However, due to high player demand, it eventually received it in the update the Yohsog and Tundrik were released.
- Varskela is nicknamed "Varsk" and often described as "Crystal thing with arms".
