This is a page dedicated to the lore for all creatures, previous worlds, and other lore-related details in Creatures of Sonaria as well as the world of Sonaria itself, even if lore contradicts previous lore iterations.
- This page pulls lore provided by creature designers or developers directly. Fan-made and unofficial lore not provided by creature designers or developers can be shared in community discussions or blogs.
Current Official Game Lore
Current official game lore follows the depiction of Cinnakxll. The Lore Document is current undergoing a rewrite to clarify many foggy details and the full official lore release has been placed on hold, waiting for the series release. Full details of officially-recognized lore is available in a public document provided by game maintainers. Though official lore is being followed, fan lore is still perfectly welcome!

Sonaria
Erythia's Depiction
According to Erythia in the Creatures of Sonaria Discord on May 27th, 2020, the world of Sonaria is the center of the Earth, and the world that the creatures of Sonaria live in is flipped. This allows all the magical and long-extinct creatures to be alive and well on the outside, allowing for creative and imaginary creatures to appear in Sonaria.
NauticaElurra's Depiction
According to NauticaElurra in the Creatures of Sonaria Discord on July 2nd, 2022, Sonaria is only a single island within a vast, expansive archipelago. The planet this archipelago is on is multitudes larger than Earth. There are continents with far bigger creatures inhabiting them — the smallest creatures on these lands being the size of a Boreal Warden.
The aquatic creatures are no exception to this, some being as large as Sonaria itself. Around the time Naut sent this depiction, two skeletal remains of such creatures can be found in Sonaria's oceans, embedded into the island.
The island of Sonaria contains smaller creatures due to the biological phenomenon of island dwarfism. There is an extreme amount of variety due to some species traveling to this island and remaining there and some being washed up after storms.
There are very few creatures that have enough endurance to travel across the ocean to reach another land mass. Ura is one of these creatures, hence why their canon lore insists they are rarely seen, and frequently travel to and from the island overseas, utilizing their ability to manipulate wind to keep them afloat without tiring.
In the past, Naut has also stated there were tribes of humans long ago in Sonaria who died out due to predation. It is not known if this is meant to coincide with Naut's statement about Sonaria and the archipelago, since it would imply that the planet Sonaria is a part of is not Earth.
Wolfragon's Depiction (old Official)
According to a public Google Document shared by Wolfragon in the Creatures of Sonaria Discord, March 28th, 2023, Sonaria (also known as the Orb) is akin to a snow globe; the land has no curvature and floats stationary in space, orbited by its sun and moon. The world's physical characteristics are constantly reshaped by the will of the Wardens — deities which predate the creation of the universe. As the center of the universe, Sonaria is subject to unusual phenomena: fights between Wardens result in frequent natural disasters, and the passage of time is significantly faster.
Sonaria is not an ecosystem of its own. Rather, it is populated by creatures from several different planets, which compose the rest of the universe. These creatures are introduced to Sonaria as part of an "environmental test" by the Wardens, with the goal of finding "prospective species," or creatures which can tolerate Sonaria's varied environment. These prospective species are shared amongst the Wardens and are prized by their creators. Creatures that are not deemed prospective remain on Sonaria regardless, and are commonly faced with extinction. The first amongst them were several enormous beings whose remains can still be found on the Orb.
Besides Sonaria, the planets from which all creatures originate are created by the Wardens independently of one another. These planetary systems exist several light years apart, making travel between them rare. Sonaria itself, due to its unique position, is consistently ≥1,000 light years away from any galaxy.
The Wardens
The Wardens themselves are commonly believed to be the creators of the universe, having been born before its inception. While direct interaction from the Wardens is rare, they are noted to be more active during their associated season or through the ideas which they embody. In the document, Wolfragon lists the names and titles of each Warden, of which there are eight. Seven names were present at the time of the article's public release, with six of them present in-game and the Angelic Warden (originally obscured by full block unicode to tease the species) being released at a later date. An eighth Warden, whose name was similarly obscured, was added to the document even later, and was revealed to be the Eigion Warden during its release week. Following the reveal of the Eigion Warden, official pronunciations of each Warden's "alternate" names were included. Even since Erythia's description, all Wardens have an alternate name, which is still kept canon on the official Lore.
While the Wardens cannot be perceived by lower creatures, each one has its own physical incarnations which roam the world. This incarnations are not the Wardens themselves, merely being their puppets, perceptual eyes and physical will in the World, each dedicated to their respective Warden. While it is assumed they resemble their Warden's true form, the actual Warden's appearance is not known. These incarnations are implied to be the playable Wardens which can be obtained in-game.
Cinnakxll's Lore (official)
According to the latest public Google Document shared by Cinnakxll, extends and updates Wolfragon's depiction, explaining more in-depth that certain factors like the lack of a true curvature are the cause or strange gravitational effects and an increased chance of natural disasters. To that we add additional facots such as Sonaria being truly an Archipielago with several landmasses and vast enough that both its sun and moon had to orbit around it, and because of unknown factors, neither seasons nor the landspace are affected as you would normally expect.
Like Wolfragon's depiction, several points are quite similar:
- The flow of seasons is incredibly fast, as is the passage of time. This impacts growth rate, as well as climate conditions and aging of species. This phenomenon is likely attributed to the intervention of the Wardens on a celestial level.
- Presumably the origin point of creation for many known species, the existence of Sonaria, and by extension the known universe, is presumably orchestrated by the Wardens. Timeline of Creation:
Warden came into being -> Universe is created with Sonaria at its centre -> The Wardens reach out across the stars, creating vast numbers of new planets with their individual inhabitants -> Sonaria serves as the gathering place for various kinds of unique creatures.
- Regarding creatures, the inhabitants of Sonaria also originate from a vast number of various other worlds. An unfathomable number of planets exist under the purview of the Wardens, with each employing their planets to create new species that can thrive within the Sonarian environment. This means new creatures are constantly introduced to Sonaria by the Wardens, and with most arrivals hailing from wildly different ecosystems, Sonaria has become extraordinarily ecologically diverse.
- It is noted that Wardens seem to continually try to innovate and improve upon their existing creations, but the reasoning behind this, as well as why they bring species to Sonaria could very well be exploitative.
- Creatures unable to withstand Sonaria's harsh ecosystem are doomed to wither into extinction. Scattered across its continents, the colossal skeletons of ancient titans stand as grim reminders. None of these behemoth creatures survived, likely failed experiments of the Wardens, or victims of a rapidly shifting environment they could no longer adapt to, nor feed within.
- Regarding rebirth and revival, the contents are quite similar, too: "Another phenomena that occurs on Sonaria is the quick resurrection of fauna. Certain creatures have been seen to be reborn, or return with their previous physical form intact. Regarding memory, a creature's memories between rebirth or resurrection have been entirely sporadic. Some have returned with their memory completely intact, a few with fragmented memories, and some with no remembrance of their past life whatsoever. So far, there seems to be no known correlation or pattern behind how much memory a creature loses upon rebirth." expanding that the cause behind the resurrections and rebirths almost certainly contributes to Sonaria’s unusually high population, with the reasoning for such an occurrence still remaining unknown.
- Warden-related lore from Wolfragon's description remains pretty much intact, but with additional lore flavour that either reaffirms, clarifies or adds new information:
- "Eight omnipresent beings exist, considered ‘Wardens’." - reaffirms of Wolfragon's lore.
- "These are deities of the known universe, and the only beings responsible for the existence and maintenance of the cycle of life. These beings create and destroy life at will." - already confirms implied information from old Wolfragon's lore document, and adds that they are the only responsible ones for that.
- "Uniting to form a collective “council” of deities, these beings of incomprehensible power each have differing abilities, as well as varying ages, intentions and individuality. When functioning as one united group, the full might of the Warden Council is nearly unstoppable." - finally confirming that, within the rough Sonarian universe's timeline, not all wardens have the same age.
- "A Warden may also show its strength through the embodiment of its ideologies."
- Wardens may also show their strength through the embodiment of their ideologies now.
- "Warden Avatars" are now better called "Warden Incarnations" - pretty much everything else about these Warden Incarnations remains unmodified, and clarify that these icnarnations are indeed a Warden's metaphorical eyes and representation of their will.
- It is confirmed now that Wardens can perform "Warden puppeteering" and have done so on ocassion: a Warden seizing control of a regular creature, almost telepathically against its own will. While the intent of a Warden puppeteering may be unknown, any creature freed from the grasp of puppetry experiences fractured memories for the remainder of its existence. Oftentimes this results in devolving levels of madness and delirium, and creatures begin to experience fragmented thoughts that aren’t their own, and hear whispers in tongues that they cannot comprehend. This anomaly, known as “residual sentience”, is thought to be a very powerful and incredibly dangerous byproduct of this puppetering.
- "Warden Keys" lore pretty much remains unmodified from Wolfragon's: "Balance must always be maintained on Sonaria. Wardens can come and go from Sonaria while visiting their other worlds and their absence is signified by the glow of their statues being completely diminished. The keys maintain balance on Sonaria during a Wardens’ prolonged absence as a substitute of their power. The power of all the wardens combined must be present in some form on Sonaria, at all times, even if a singular warden is offworld, so it is supplied by the keys in their stead. Runes and symbols are occasionally present around Sonaria that disclose the whereabouts of specific warden keys."
- Additinally, each Warden gained a confirmed personality trait.
- Inkpujin's lore about preventing a catastrophe gets confirmed.
| Warden | Alternate Name | Pronunciation | Titles | Relations to the World |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ardor Warden |
Zohutek | Zo - hōō - tek | Sentinel of Love and bringer of blossoming | This Warden is a caring individual, nurturing the progression of life on each World. Zohutek sets paths for individuals to follow, leading them to others of their kind. In such a harsh world, partnership is difficult, and raising the next generation is even more of a challenge. Zohutek keeps a close eye on the possible extinction of any species. |
Boreal Warden |
Qhualhul | Call - hōōl | Sentinel of Hope and bringer of winter | This Warden is known to be set in its ways. Self-centered and ignorant, conflicts between Wardens are often instigated by Qhualhul due to their differing values and virtues compared to the other deities. |
Garra Warden |
Mors’vuhk | Mour - z vuh - hck | Harbinger of Death and sentinel of the dead | Egotistical and mischievous, Mors’vuhk enjoys toying with the concept of death. Wherever Mors’vuhk’s trail of death and destruction leads, the deities of life and rebirth are never far behind. |
Hellion Warden |
Nukzeh | Nuk - zeh | Sentinel of Time and bringer of summer | Vain and conceited, this Warden cannot tolerate disturbance. The very implication of their attention being wasted causes their relations with the other wardens to be permanently uneasy and fragile. |
Novus Warden |
Omnibus | Om - ni - bus | Sentinel of Form and harbinger of the unknown | This warden cares deeply about order and the restriction of chaos. Often having aspirations larger than other wardens, this individual is always curious about limitations of its own power and influence. |
Verdant Warden |
Farhaus | Far - haws | Sentinel of Life and bringer of spring | The Warden known as a botanist, this individual perfects the flora they interact with. This Warden struggles with the creation of flesh and bone alone so oftentimes they turn to the fusion of flora and fauna into one entity. |
Angelic Warden |
Serphelius | Sir - fee - lee - us | Sentinel of Rebirth and balance | This Warden guides the revival of fallen species, including but not limited to its own creations alongside those of other Wardens. Interfering with the natural cycle of life and death, this being allows the fallen a second chance by rebirth. It is proud of the strength of any species it has created. |
Eigion Warden |
Malveathian | Mal - và - the - in | Maelstrom of the depths and sentinel of fear | This Warden enjoys the aftermath of a fight, feeding off of the agony, pain, and terror endured by those on the losing side of a battle. Malveathian purposefully warps the nature of certain fauna, producing some of the most blood thirsty species. |
Daimona
Information about Daimona in relation to Sonaria is no longer canon, but it will be kept on the wiki for archival purposes. Daimona lore in greater detail is available on a sub-page at Daimona Lore, due to its unique nature of having once been in the game but is recognized as having been officially separated.
Trivia
- Although not completely official at first, Sonarian Font has appeared in artworks and on the map hinting at different lore points, most notably the Warden Shrines in legacy... and later on became official with the Mystery of the Keys Event 2023.
- Warden Shrines locations can also be found on the Maps available on recode map page and legacy.
- Some sections of the Official Cretures of Sonaria Discord, like #lore-discussion, have Scrap Extracts as well, some in Sonarian Font, some in Latin, others a combination of both.
- At 26th July 2024, there are three of those extracts in that channel, plus some extra scraps:
- Extract I:
- Serphelius: Above us... look Omnibus... the sky dust, it moves?
- Omnibus: They are souls, my dear Serphelius. They fly without wings, up and around this world. They are present within all life of Sonaria. Even within us. We shape the souls of the forgotten into the life of the new.
- Extract II:
- Serphelius: Omnibus, I implore you, look closer. I know our ways, better than any other. I have given life to an unfathomable number of species and this is unalike anything I have seen. Not a soul, but alike in substance... It moved along with them, entwined in the sky... Until... A type of dark matter, originating from our world?
- Extract III:
- Omnibus: There, another flicker. Perhaps a remnant of our creation? It left a vessel, the same as a soul does? ... Serphelius, what are they?
- Serphelius: That is no soul, Omnibus. I do not recognize it as one of our life forms. I'm not even sure it is... living.
- ?
- "Do not fear, my son, I will watch over you. I will cover you under my wing so that you are safe. The world is troubled, but I will teach you."
- ???
- "Woe to ye who thought the battle was won and woe to ye who thought the battle has been lost. I am the harbinger, the primordial, the light of your darkness and the darkness of your light. This war is not over yet… No winner shall prevail for I alone am the victor. They fear me, silence me and despise me. Yet I prevail. Continue your quarrels for I am always the victor in the end. The Land, Sea and Sky shall belong only again to me!"
- "My kingdom once vast, was stolen by those wretched deities above." "Banished alone, I persisted through Nukzeh and Serphelius's shackles and became one with matter, both light and dark."
- Extract I:
- At 26th July 2024, there are three of those extracts in that channel, plus some extra scraps:
- Some articles on the wiki have Scraps/Extracts in Sonarian font as well.
- The Angelic Warden's title — Sentinel of Rebirth and balance — was revealed long before the creature itself. Prior to its release, both names in Wolfragon's document were substituted by the full block character, "█", with ██████████ in place of "Serphelius", and ███████ in place of "Angelic". Of the two names, Serphelius was the first to be revealed, with Angelic Warden's actual name being included after the creature was unveiled as part of the LSS Event 2023.
- Similarly, the Eigion Warden's details were also obscured with the same unicode character. However, the amount hidden was greater than that of the Angelic Warden's teaser, with the only available text reading "Sentinel of Fear" initially. Gradually, its full title was uncovered (Maelstrom of the depths and Sentinel of Fear), followed by the names "Eigion" and "Malveathian" respectively. The creature's design itself was not known until after the second week of the Summer Paradise Event 2023.
- Warden names are used for Era naming in the Recode Sonarian Calendar
