Pop-up notifying a player of their mutation
Mutations are cosmetic effects (with certain exceptions, such as Dwarfism or Gigantism, which modify model and hitbox size, and thus can slightly alter combat and travel gameplay mechanics) that have a small chance of being applied to creatures under certain circumstances. There are currently two types of mutations: nesting mutations, which can only be acquired by hatching in another player's nest and are applied to a creature the moment they spawn in, and growth mutations, which have a chance to occur during certain growth milestones and will inform the player with a pop-up. Included in the latter category is the original game's Glimmer, which has a chance to apply under the same circumstances as its Legacy version. A creature cannot receive growth mutations if tokens are used to grow it.
In the Legacy game, mutations were originally stat modifiers that were eventually removed and replaced by plushies. Since then, similar mutations have been re-added and are now known as traits or stat traits. For more information on these stat-modifying mutations, see Traits.
Creatures which possess mutations are marked with a double helix emblem resembling DNA, while creatures with traits are marked with colored hexagonal cells; these emblems appear both on the main menu and the in-game stat menu, and can be hovered over to reveal the mutation/trait's name. Creatures with mutations that have died can be restarted with their mutations for a fee of 50 Shooms; otherwise, they will lose their mutations upon restart. Whether a player restarts the creature slot fresh or to keep its previous mutations, it can still receive growth mutations. Creatures with mutations obtained through nesting can also receive growth mutations. As such, a creature can possess multiple mutations, specifically up to three.
Recode Mutations Classification
Mutations can be classified according to diverse criteria, not necessarily exclusive to each other, that help determine their availability and ways to stumble upon a specific mutation:
Natural Mutations
These mutations are available year-round either via nesting or growth without the use of special methods, meaning there's always a chance to be born with these mutations when hatched from a nest or when growing a creature to a certain age, albeit some may have special ways to get boosted. The list is as follows (click on them to see more information):
- Albinism
- Diamond
- Dwarfism
- Gigantism
- Glimmer
- Glow Tail
- Leucistic
- Melanism
- Overgrown
- Piebald
- Shadow
- Shimmer
Event Mutations
These mutations are available during the month of specific limited events, either via nesting or growth, and may sometimes be boosted through special methods. They can also become available at least a week before the event, as was the case with the Halloween mutations. The list is as follows:
- January Events:
- February Events:
- March Events:
- April Events:
- May Events:
- June Events:
- July Events:
- September Events:
- October Events:
- November Events:
- December Events:
Special Mutations
These mutations, either via nesting or growth, receive a chance or boost through special methods, such as the use of limited event plushies, redeem codes, or a combination of them. The plushies can be purchased directly using in-game currencies (excluding Robux) during specific limited events or indirectly through the Trade Realm. Unlike event mutations, these special mutations are usually available year-round, via plushie in most cases. The list is as follows:
- Blood Moon (Catalyst, all year round)
- Elemental (Elemental, all year round)
- Fool's Gold (Golden Bulb, all year round)
- Smore (Smore Cat, all year round)
Premium Mutations
These mutations, either via nesting or growth, are special mutations, but their special methods, such as the use of plushies, are purchased directly with Robux or indirectly through the Trade Realm. They may also be seasonal or event-themed. The list is as follows:
- Available (via plushie):
- Bewitched (Magic Frog[1], all year round)
- Clownfish (Clownfish, all year round)
- Boosted (via plushie):
- Any available mutation (Octroma, all year round)
Content Creator Mutations
These mutations have been made exclusive to Creatures of Sonaria Content Creators. Users with this role can obtain or give the mutations with the help of exclusive plushies that only they can use. While the plushies themselves are untradable, other users are able to receive the mutations from Content Creators via nesting or trading stored creatures that has it. The list is as follows:
- Creator Star (Creator Star, all year round)
Developer Mutations
These mutations exist and can be encountered rarely in-game. Some creature slots with these exclusive mutations belong to players who have had unique encounters with the core developer team. The core developer team are the only users capable of generating these "Developer Mutations" as they are unobtainable from any other source. It is speculated that these mutations are provided to users who encounter extremely rare issues that prevent normal gameplay to the point where developers are involved to repair problems. The list is as follows:
Mutation Layering
Players are able to obtain up to three different mutations on a single creature, however, only one mutation will be shown on the creature in-game, with the exception of Glimmer. Glimmer is the only mutation that will show alongside a different mutation. This is because it is coded differently than the rest of the cosmetic mutations. For example, even though the Shimmer and Glow Tail mutations add neon parts to a creature just like Glimmer does, they will not stack with each other because they are not coded to do so.

Trivia
- The white mutation icon seen in-game serves as a placeholder for new mutations until their official icons are created and added to the game.
- During 2023, the mutation placeholder icon was slightly different, as it did not have any sparkles around it.
- It's possible for creatures to receive double of the same mutation, though this is extremely rare and possibly a glitch. However, it is not possible to receive triple of the same mutation, as the third slot is solely reserved for Glimmer.
- There was a glitch where players could combat log to acquire growth mutations more quickly.
- As of April 19th, 2024, combat logging no longer works for growth-based missions, however this unintentionally fixed the quick method bug players used to get growth mutations, with the exception of Glimmer.
- Previously, the exact mutation chances (excluding event mutations) were shared with the community. However, due to how Roblox perceives the game's code, mutation percentages constantly become inaccurate and outdated and are thus no longer revealed to the public. [5][6]
- Before the Recode version of the game was released, Glimmer was the only cosmetic mutation during the Legacy version.
- It is also the only mutation that is coded differently than the others and isn't tied to the mutation system.
- Players can toggle any mutations on/off for their creature in the customization menu. However, this wasn't the case for Glimmer until the May 3rd, 2024 update.
- In the customization menu, the toggle buttons for mutations use different icons from their actual mutation icons, such as Signature Look icons or letters, like 'G' for Glimmer.
- The Glow Head and Glow Tail mutations currently share the same icon.
- The Shadow Reverse and Shimmer mutations currently share the same icon.
- The Bewitched and Headless mutations shared the same icon until February 7th, 2025, when the Bewitched mutation was given its own icon.
- The Clover and Emerald mutations shared the same icon until May 31st, 2024, when the Emerald mutation was given the placeholder icon.
- On June 7th, 2024, the Emerald mutation received its own icon.
- The Garnet and Pearl mutations shared the same icon until January 31st, 2025, when the Garnet mutation was given the placeholder icon.
- On February 7th, 2025, the Garnet mutation received its own icon.
- Typically, some event mutations are released a week before their corresponding events. Examples include Blossom, Clover, Frostburn, Ghosty, Headless, and Zombified. Except for the Harvest mutation, which was first released two weeks before its event.
- Around December 15th, 2023, the Coal Chunk mutation was accidentally released to the public and borrowed the Frostburn icon. This issue was quickly patched.
- After the patch, players who had obtained the Coal Chunk mutation had experienced issues where the mutation wouldn't show in some servers but would appear in others.
- On December 22nd, 2023, Coal Chunk was officially added to the game along with its correct icon.
- The Clownfish mutation was originally meant to be attached to the month of the Summer Paradise Events, however it received its own plushie on August 1st, 2024, allowing it to remain available after the month ends.
- The Headless mutation sometimes affects other parts of a creature's body that have true faces or mouths, which are often located on their tails. Some examples include the Angelic Warden, Hellion Warden, Kretsnik, and Sigmatox.
- As of October 13th, 2023, the Headless mutation received an update where the head on creatures appear more invisible.
- On December 22nd, 2023, the Headless mutation received another update where the neck of most creatures has little to no transparency. Before, the creature's neck was more transparent.
- Around December 22nd, 2023, the Glow Tail mutation received an update where it affects mostly the tail. Before, certain parts of the creature's body would also glow, such as the thighs, back feet, and sometimes thumbs or other areas.
- On April 26th, 2024, the Shadow mutation received an update where creatures with teeth appear neon white. This was to accommodate no-eye creatures. Before, most creatures with this mutation only had glowing white eyes.
- As of May 24th, 2024, some brown colors of the Harvest mutation were changed to a smooth beige texture. This was due to Roblox changing a material.
- The mutation received an update on August 30th, 2024, where some beige colors were changed back to brown, but still retained some of its yellowy smooth texture.
- As of September 13th, 2024, the Frostburn mutation received an update where its snowy Glacier material was changed to a smooth texture. This was likely due to Roblox changing the material.
- The mutation received an update on January 31st, 2025, where its smooth texture was changed back to its Glacier material.
Notes
- ↑ During the Halloween 2023 event, the rates of Zombified, Headless, and Ghosty mutations were also boosted by the Magic Frog plushie. This has since been changed and the plushie is now only related to the Bewitched mutation.
- ↑ Although the Magic Frog plushie's description says age 100, it can in fact be obtained at age 67, as can be seen here.
- ↑ Unless using specific glimmering tokens.
- ↑ Although the Smore Cat plushie's description says age 100, it can only be obtained at age 67.
- ↑ See here for an explanation of why mutation percentages are no longer revealed.
- ↑ See here for a breakdown of the mutation system.
