Diets[]

Currently, there are a variety of diets, such as herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, photovore, and photocarnivore that determine what is required to satisfy a creature's needs to continue surviving.

Types of Food[]

Edible plants in the game may appear on land as grass patches, bushes with berries or other types of fruit, which are located on the ground, in trees around the map, or in very shallow waters. Underwater, there are edible palm trees and seaweed along the sea floor.

Creatures that require meat may kill any other creature (or scavenge) for food. Upon killing another creature, a carcass will appear. The size of a creature will typically determine the size of the carcass, unless it is an NPC, which by default, will give a small carcass. A player's carcass will almost always provide more food than NPC carcass, especially when the carcass was from an adult creature, or from a high tier (the only possible exception is shark NPCs, which give 50 meat).

Where to Find Meat[]

An easy way to find meat is to find meat spawn points, aquatic NPC spawn points or players located around the map. In very old Legacy, servers with a large number of players would spawn more NPCs to accommodate a higher population (at least, for terrestrial ones, before those got removed). A location with a large number of players would increase chances of NPCs spawning nearby.

Identifying Diet[]

To identify a creature's diet while playing on the map, either look for the diet symbol on the bottom left of the screen next to the yellow arch-like stamina bar, or press K to open the Creature Info window, which displays a creature's stats. On the bottom left of the window, it will state a creature's diet under the Info section.

  • The basic diets are displayed in main menu, and, on a more recent update, the special diets too once the creature species has been selected:
    • (green) require plants and water.
    • (blue) require plants or meat and water.
    • (red) require meat and water.
    • require only water. In legacy main menu, they are represented as a more turquoise shade of green. Legacy gameplay-wise, they are mostly treated as herbivores (and in the main menu categories too), being unable to grab carnivores. On recode that is not the case - in fact, their carcasses are treated as vegetables and meat.
    • require only meat, displayed red (slightly lighter, oranger than carnivores) on legacy in main menu by default and sharing the carnivores submenu, and can't be grabbed by herbivores or photovores.

Carnivore[]

Carnivores[1] are creatures that eat carcasses in-game. They must scavenge or hunt AI or other players to obtain carcasses. Since carcasses rot over time, they eventually have to hunt again or scavenge for carcasses around the map. They can find carcasses by pressing the H key on a computer (or the Sniff button on mobile). A red line (an stomach bubble in recode) will lead players to the nearest meat. They can't be grabbed by herbivores nor photovores. Some common Carnivores include Kendyll, Koipise, and Hushike.

  • There are currently 108 carnivores (including both Legacy with Recode).
  • In legacy, as a general rule (exceptions being Rukig and Valkurse), all carnivores can use Ambush.

Herbivore[]

Herbivores[2] are creatures that eat grass, fruits and berry bushes on land, or seaweed and algae underwater. They must find bushes around the map to feast on, keeping themselves inside the optimal areas for mobility. To find the nearest bushes or underwater plants, you must use the H key (or Sniff button), and follow the green line, it will lead players to the nearest edible food for this diet (on recode's case, all nearby ones, with less accuracy). Some common Herbivores include Gramoss, Lmakosauruodon, and Saukuryn.

On legacy only, herbivores can't carry carnivores nor photocarnivores, however they can be grabbed by other creatures.

  • There are currently 82 released herbivores.
  • On legacy few herbivores possess ambush, since herbivores usually don't need an additional boost to their running speed due to not needing to hunt to feed.
  • From 23rd January 2022, on Legacy, if there are too many carnivores or omnivores, herbivore's growth speed gets increased by 50%.

Omnivore[]

Omnivores[3] are creatures that eat plants and meat, and have the option to hunt creatures, scavenge for meat, or search for plants. If one food option is unavailable, they have the perk of being able to eat the other option (and unlike most real-like omnivores, won't get sick or ill if they only eat one source of food). To find the nearest food, use the H key (or Sniff button), and the same indicators for herbivore and carnivore will appear.

  • There are currently 65 released omnivores.
  • Omnivores are a mixed category, some of them have ambush while others don't, albeit newer-released omnivores tend to have ambush too.
  • On recode, there are very few omnivores, with most of them switching to carnivore or herbivore.

Photovore[]

Photovores[4] are unique because they don’t actually eat. However, they lose strength at night, likely because they gain food through sunlight.

  • There are currently 10 released photovores.
  • These creatures tend to be easiest to grow, since water is the most common and reliable source. On the other hand, with a few exceptions, they tend to have lower attack stats and abilities compared with non-photovores.
  • Due to how they lack any need to eat (with the stomach indicator practically non-existent), they are far more tolerant to any stomach-draining effect, such as legacy's cold (since until level 20 legacy cold, the most important debuffs are just slowing down and belly depleting faster).

In Legacy, because of those, their males can produce food in their food storages. As with herbivores, by default they can't grab any carnivore nor photocarnivore.

  • Due to how they can still produce food in food storages, without getting hungry, those who can access their food storage can be granted with a potentially endless source of food.
  • In Legacy, since photovores stemmed from herbivores, for obvious reasons they lacked Ambush too.

Photocarnivore[]

Photocarnis[5], short for Photocarnivores, are creatures who eat meat, but do not require water. Like Photovores, they lose strength at night, likely because they need sunlight to produce water. Due to how they lack any water bar to refill, they are far more tolerant to water-draining effects, for example, in legacy, the effects of consuming rotten meat - albeit on legacy the water bar actually still exists, just that it recovers to max every few seconds. On the other hand, they are far more vulnerable to the cold effect in legacy mode.

  • There are currently 12 photocarnivores in-game.

In legacy, they can't be grabbed by herbivores nor photovores by default.

  • Photocarnivores tend to be difficult to grow because experimentally speaking it seems that the stomach levels drop twice as fast, specially while growing.
  • Due to how important is for photocarnivores to consume meat, most of them can use Ambush.
